Information for referring veterinarians
Analgesia: peroral or parenteral administration of NSAIDs or opioids for pain
Application of a neck collar to prevent further damage, especially by the animal itself.
Moistening the surface of the eye with tear substitutes or a NaCl solution.
Injuries to the eyelids: should be treated surgically within 2-3 days, as scarring can have a negative effect on the tear film and thus on the surface of the eye.
Perforating corneal injuries: should be treated microsurgically as soon as possible. Hypotony caused by aqueous humor outflow can cause retinal detachment and other complications that can lead to blindness. For initial medical treatment, please contact the ophthalmologist to whom you would like to refer to.
Bulbar prolapse: should be treated as soon as possible by surgery (reduction and tarsorraphy). In the meantime, high-frequency moistening of the cornea is required.
Acute increase of intraocular pressure: should be investigated and treated as soon as possible to determine the possible cause, as an irreversible loss of vision can occur.
The emergency service of the Zurich Animal Hospital is available around the clock. The ophthalmology department provides support and continues to treat hospitalized patients the next day. An ophthalmologist is available on call during the day on Saturdays and Sundays.
